Not defend Steffan, for I'm sure he can defend himself, but he was in a no win situation. With questions like “Where do you draw the line between morality and advertising?” and "Do you believe there is such a thing as moral advertising?” , it's no wonder he sidestepped them if that's the case. A yes to either one brings with it judgment that you're a bible thumper, a no to either means you're a greedy amoral prick. It's like asking if you spit or swallow? There's no right answer.
Of course, the topic of the evening begs them, but who chose the topic? Was it Steffan or was it the NDAC? Either way a better title was needed.
You can't blame a guy for trying to sell his book.

this is news? look, postaer is someone who has been living off the fumes of a campaign he was part of creating 15 years ago or so. if you've ever wondered if an individual could actually fellate himself, read his blog. he proves it's possible on a daily basis. and goldoneshow, you can blame a guy for trying to sell his book if it's a trite piece of shit--which his absolutely is.

I'll bet everything I own that the "Altoids" somehow appeared in the speech. It ALWAYS does with this guy. So sad to have to hang on the distant past sooo hard!
  • Conan · 8 months ago
In the year 2000, each time Steffan Postaer says “Altoids”, everyone will be required to down a shot.

Yikes! Despite the super-fan from Cactus, I had a great time and got a lot out of it. I also think the Denver Ad Club did a marvelous job. You have a good thing going in Mile High. Keep it up.
As for you, Spy. Tisk, tisk. If "you hated" my novel then why did you recommend it? Reread your review. In fact, I hope everybody does. Then check out the review on Adscam. Look, it ain't Moby Dick. It's a ten-dollar paperback on Amazon. Even George Parker gets that:

Your blogosphere education is sad to watch. You should know by now that your retorts only make you look worse.

The presentation you made in Denver is a presentation you created while still at Leo Burnett. People constantly accuse you of living in the past, displaying work from decades ago.

Why don't you try to present something fresh? Show people how you've resurrected your current shop, to further your spiritual theme. Or perhaps there isn't a real story there. Are you a false prophet?

Um, the AS review was not positive. An opening line read, “It was meh.” Perhaps you need someone to define meh.

I was at the talk, too. Contrary to the Cactus guy, I rather enjoyed it.

In the interest of full disclosure, the Cactus author was a disgruntled question-asker at the end of the discussion. He didn't get a suitable answer for a rather pointed/no-win question, so he got all pissed and wrote a scathing review.

I'd personally like to thank Steffan for coming to Denver.

    Denver-ite,

Why do I get the feeling you’re actually from Chicago? As others have noted, the presentation was a prepackaged, outdated rerun. Hope you weren’t charged to witness the event. Cactus probably realized it on some levels and responded accordingly.
  • Denver-ite · 8 months ago
Actually, I'm from Pittsburgh, originally. Cactus was just being douchey.

As for the presentation being a prepackaged rerun... well I guess I didn't get to see it at Cannes like you did. It was new for me – and I'm sure for most of the audience.
  • ChiAdGuy · 8 months ago
Nah, he reran it at Cannes too. The presentation is probably about 5 years old at least. It’s an outdated informational presentation from an outdated ad person.
