    @armano

    Do you think banners are dead (i.e. advertisers shouldn't produce them)?
  • David Armano · 7 months ago
    @mcluhead

    I think banners are non engagement (metrics support this), meaning you can pretty much get the same level of effectiveness with a flat, low cost execution. There are a few rare exceptions. So actually, not dead. But I wouldn't want to work on them. And I'll re-state my caveat, I didn't grow up on the Ad side, so take it with a grain of salt.

    It's a good question though.

    Banners are still around - but the percentage of spend one devotes to these tactics is diminishing. Any good integrated campaign respects the power (albeit small).

    Less sophomoric caterwauling,
    and more like this please.

    I enjoyed the telling and the teller,
    hate to admit this, but I was predisposed to deslike him
    (and for no good reason). Maybe it's just 'cause I'm an old fart
    caught up in his old fart world? Which is frighteningly
    crumbling about him.

    However I enjoyed David, and David's presentation.

    Not sure how I'm going to bill that 01:22 (hour plus) guess I'll
    just have to chalk it up to "RESEARCH."

    Thanks!

    Jim, glad you got something out of the talk. I put it together on a Saturday night and gave it on a Monday night, so it was pretty off the cuff.

    *** THIS IS NOT YET ANOTHER SMART-ASS REJOINDER ***

    I too watched David's entire treatise on where we are, and what may lie ahead.
    I enjoyed it! Admittedly I am a neanderthal (in this brave new world) and a bit overwhelmed by how we've all been transmogrified these past 10 years.

    William Goldman remarked: "NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING"!

    I think David knows much, but I think David too is a bit like Henry Morton Stanley was back in 1872? Trying best to navigate these new and uncharted jungles. It's two-steps forward, one-step sideways, we're all making it up as we go. Most creative endeavors are like that, you make 9 bad moves, and if your lucky, one brilliant maneuver redeems you.

    David's talk reminded me of this old SNL Steve Martin bit.

    We always think that the time we live in represents the apex of man's knowledge. Yet inevitably 100 years from now (probably 10) some new generation will be mocking our TWITTERS and such? David keep thinking,
    keep talking, and I'll try to keep keeping-up!

    K.C. They weren't able to record the beginning of the presentation where I said "what do I know"? You make a great point. It's all guesswork. I did take a guess that this whole social way of doing business was going to be a big deal and it's turning out to be the case. And others have made that call before me.

    Really like the link to Steve Martin. Especially since it's on Hulu. I called out Hulu as an example of innovation since it didn't come from silicon valley where we've seen most of that happen in recent years.

    Thanks for watching.
