    Yawnnn...same old, same old.

Yah, boring as shit. This guy brings nothing new to the table. sure maybe he's won some awards. we all have. There's not a shred of insight about the future in this video that a monkey couldn't read in Adweek. The agency should be called "treading water".

He may be a great creative, but his new agency needs a new face person. And even though they're aiming for irony, the name really sucks. May as well call it, We'll Do Anything You Want for Money.

Shands is not exactly the go-getter type. He spent more time at Chiat being a blowhard than anything else. My guess is that he was pushed out and can't get CD position anywhere else or even a decent freelance gig in a big city. At least, he's in a town with good BBQ.

Hmm. James Martin as head account planner. Oh, you guys will go far.

Am I missing something? Or did Joe apparently go to a couple local social media breakfast meetings and mistakenly believe that he's onto something new?

There isn't a single ounce of news in this piece.

    What a load of crap!

First off, This guys was asked off Nissan then Visa by the client and apparently pissed off Pepsi. So, the agency finally asked him to leave.

Secondly, this guys is a TV/Film dude through and through. The rest doesn't matter. He is a good actor though and a good creative, I'll give him that. But a people person, not.

At first I disliked Shands when we worked together at C/D. His personality can be acerbic and there were lots of battles. It was insufferable. But at some point we found common ground and became friends. I truly like him. Firsthand I saw Clients who were not gutsy enough to buy his really brilliant work. He had a breakthrough campaign for Nissan that I'll never forget, and he got every Agency partner to love it and rally around it. His presentation made me proud to be in advertising. And it was the most connection I'd ever seen amongst the various disciplines and shops supporting Nissan (not all of them always friendly to each other.) Don't know how this will end up for him, but C/D ain't the same place it used to be. It takes balls to leave in a recession, and folks are leaving there in droves. I know I'm glad I'm gone.

    Holy crap what a douche!

Finally Joe will be able to ruin his own clients instead of those at other agencies.

There comes a certain time in your career where you either stay long enough to become, bitter, resented or beyond the control of any ECD Joe reached that point where it was time for him to stop talking and start doing. It will be interesting to see how he incorporates somethings that are completely new to him - digital/social/leadership, but there is only one way for anyone to know. Regardless of anyone's opinion of him, or whether he succeeds or fails, he is doing it on his own terms and that's more than most can say.

    I'll buy that.

Amen to that. I wish him well.

    Well put.

if, after years in advertising, the "things that are new to you" are digital/social/leadership and you are trying to start up a new agency you are in BIG trouble.

just painful to watch. This guy is a complete fucktard and has no business even working in advertising. nothing of value here - advertising 101. very sad.

We all have egos. But to put your face and your belief in your talents out for us jaded, bitter "Guest" takes balls. While we hide behind witty user names he put his face on it. Love him or hate him. I gotta take my hat off to him.

    Joe. Good Luck!

Don't be naive. If you're out on the street these days, it doesn't take courage to start a place. All that is required is no place to go and desperation. And he isn't gonna get far with Mr. Martin.

i partnered w Shands back in the day at Wieden and i can tell all you haters that he is a f-cking great guy, a great creative, and great with clients. i love this site and love reading all this shit, but damn... y'all are just mean some times.
  • Good luck · 1 month ago
I always like to see old partners and friends stick up for each other here. Sometimes this can be a real lonely place. I don't know the dude, but sf camp, you're a good friend. Rock on.
  • thelastone · 1 month ago
i'd venture to gues you are one of the few that would say that.

If this guy came from a digital background, then I'd believe this shop would work. But this reeks of an over the hill big agency CD who is trying to capitalize on the latest marketing/advertising trend.
  • joshmchugh · 1 month ago
Man, @adrants the comments are so toxic here. Disabling anonymous comments eliminates spineless snipers. Unless that's the point.
  • Boobies · 1 month ago
But it limits the kind of free speech and honesty that only anonymity can give you.
  • @joshmchugh · 1 month ago
Then how is Chiat ever going to bash ex-employees without anonymous comments?
  • my_question · 1 month ago
why are so many people leaving chiat?
  • @my_question · 1 month ago
The agency has become a political snakepit. And the work isn't as good as it used to be - nor is the pay - so there is very little incentive to stay.

The thing about Shands is he makes a great first impression, however he soon grates. Unfortunately, this video does not highlight this facet of his personality. Which begs the question, does he really have what it takes to form an agency that is on the cutting edge if this is the tone/piece he choose to break the word with? I'm not sure, but it's a wobbly start. It may speak to his lack of understanding of new media. Or perhaps he thought this would be "cool". Possibly he believes there is no such thing as bad press. It appears that like a lot of older ad guys, he simply doesn't get it. But listen you can't have spent years at some of the best agencies without having some degree of talent and a big personality. Shands does have talent and a big personality (kindly put). The other poster who commented on him being asked off various Chiat accounts got it right (and the speculation by many is that he was on the verge of being asked to leave altogether). This personal relationship issue started many years earlier. In those days the word on the street had it that he was almost fired from Goodby for screaming at the support staff there. So, what do we have? A start up that seemly has no new idea about how to deal with today's fragmented market led by a man that is known over time to rub clients, creatives and people in general the wrong way. This is not a winning combination on the surface. Hopefully there is more meat underneath. In my career, the heads of the agencies that I have worked for have been asses. If personal history is any measure, he'll probably set the world on fire.
