The thing about Shands is he makes a great first impression, however he soon grates. Unfortunately, this video does not highlight this facet of his personality. Which begs the question, does he really have what it takes to form an agency that is on the cutting edge if this is the tone/piece he choose to break the word with? I'm not sure, but it's a wobbly start. It may speak to his lack of understanding of new media. Or perhaps he thought this would be "cool". Possibly he believes there is no such thing as bad press. It appears that like a lot of older ad guys, he simply doesn't get it. But listen you can't have spent years at some of the best agencies without having some degree of talent and a big personality. Shands does have talent and a big personality (kindly put). The other poster who commented on him being asked off various Chiat accounts got it right (and the speculation by many is that he was on the verge of being asked to leave altogether). This personal relationship issue started many years earlier. In those days the word on the street had it that he was almost fired from Goodby for screaming at the support staff there. So, what do we have? A start up that seemly has no new idea about how to deal with today's fragmented market led by a man that is known over time to rub clients, creatives and people in general the wrong way. This is not a winning combination on the surface. Hopefully there is more meat underneath. In my career, the heads of the agencies that I have worked for have been asses. If personal history is any measure, he'll probably set the world on fire.

At first I disliked Shands when we worked together at C/D. His personality can be acerbic and there were lots of battles. It was insufferable. But at some point we found common ground and became friends. I truly like him. Firsthand I saw Clients who were not gutsy enough to buy his really brilliant work. He had a breakthrough campaign for Nissan that I'll never forget, and he got every Agency partner to love it and rally around it. His presentation made me proud to be in advertising. And it was the most connection I'd ever seen amongst the various disciplines and shops supporting Nissan (not all of them always friendly to each other.) Don't know how this will end up for him, but C/D ain't the same place it used to be. It takes balls to leave in a recession, and folks are leaving there in droves. I know I'm glad I'm gone.

There comes a certain time in your career where you either stay long enough to become, bitter, resented or beyond the control of any ECD Joe reached that point where it was time for him to stop talking and start doing. It will be interesting to see how he incorporates somethings that are completely new to him - digital/social/leadership, but there is only one way for anyone to know. Regardless of anyone's opinion of him, or whether he succeeds or fails, he is doing it on his own terms and that's more than most can say.

First off, This guys was asked off Nissan then Visa by the client and apparently pissed off Pepsi. So, the agency finally asked him to leave.

Secondly, this guys is a TV/Film dude through and through. The rest doesn't matter. He is a good actor though and a good creative, I'll give him that. But a people person, not.
