mediabistro.com: AgencySpy: Predictions For The Ad Biz. It's Almost 2009! Whoop! - mediabistro.com: AgencySpy

Brands will want immediate reach and will seek comfort in broadcasting.

Digital production budgets will get slammed in favor of search and media.

Clients will buy more ideas from online media properties like Funny or Die.

Some hot digital agencies will get their wings clipped as the BDAs get stingy about letting their revenue go to other companies.

BDAs will get more aggressive in building their own digital capabilities in an effort to stem the revenue bleed.

The work will get much less interesting as clients will want an even more direct correlation between tactic and sales.

    in 2009,
we will be entering our first full year of the recession, it will be year 1 of 3. when it is over, the only things left standing will be Conan O'Brian's hair, Bob Dole's dick and B&T guys waiting to get into a club.

Thank about it.... we're asking these guys what they think 2009 will be like.... while at the same time they they are handing out pink slips for their failed 2008 model... my honest opinion... you're asking the wrong people... evidently they don't have a clue.

And we're hiring. Judiciously, but we're hiring.

All due respect Ian, but your predictions sound suspiciously like your hopes.

LOL! I thought the same thing. These guys who say, "Boutique media buying firms start taking business from the big boys." Always pray that is the case as they know big clients are constantly trying to trim their vendor lists to reduce costs. Consolidation actually causes the exact opposite of Ian's prediction and 2009 will have a lot of consolidation and worse contraction (firms just go bye bye.)

Well, the way I see it, is that it's a cycle. Like independent record labels in the 90s. Of course they wind up getting bought in the long run, but then new shops sprout up. Recessions ALWAYS breed new shops, and clients with a desire to not be underserviced. I'd bet on it, given the ad world's history. I've got a pretty big bet on it now.

I started this agency in a recession, and others will too.

The writing is on the wall with all of these things. They're no longer hopes, my friend. They're eventualities.

BTW, I also predicted that the Mets would win the world series last year. Maybe this was just a little misdirection. Or maybe it wasn't. Bwahahaha. Ha.
